Sonchus Arvensis: Prickley Sow-thistle

The blossom of the Sonchus Arvensis looks just like the Dandelion blossoms, due to the fact that they are both members of the Aster family.

The young leaves of the sow thistle can be picked, eaten raw in salads or cooked as a vegetable. The Sow thistle likes to grow in cultivated fields, roadsides, clearings, meadows, and thickets. It is common at low to middle elevations mostly in settled areas of the Pacific Northwest region.

Sow thistles can be distinguished from the true thistle by breaking the stems. Sow-thistles have a milky latex, while true thistles do not. Theses plants were photographed along the Stanley Park causeway in Vancouver at the end of April.
